Event welfare planning usually starts and ends with public toilets, and then the build crew spends a week on a showground with nowhere to wash their hands. If you employ or engage people to build, run and break down an event, their welfare is your responsibility, and a field has none of it built in.
What crew and staff need
- Toilets and hand washing with warm water, separate from (and better than) the public provision
- Somewhere to rest, eat and make a hot drink out of the weather
- Drinking water
- Somewhere to dry off and store kit, build weeks are rarely dry ones
For build and break crews working over multiple days, this is the same welfare duty any employer carries; the event licence and your health and safety plan will expect it answered.
Why self-contained units fit events
Greenfield sites have no mains water, power or drainage, which rules out anything that needs a hook-up. A self-contained welfare unit carries its own water, holds its own waste and makes its own power with a super-silenced generator: towed into position before the build starts, moved if the site plan changes, gone the day after the break. The 12ft covers a small crew; the 20ft with office doubles as the site office for the event build.
Timing and access
Book for the full build-to-break window, not the event dates, the crew is on site longest when the public is not. And walk the delivery route before we arrive: festival gates, cattle grids and soft ground are all solvable when we know about them. Our event welfare hire page covers what we do for organisers across the North East.
